A Perfectly Lazy Day in Ajo
There is something truly restorative about a day with no “must-dos”—just a slow pace, good coffee, and a few small wins for the road. Our time in Ajo has been exactly that, and today was the pinnacle of a “nice lazy day” on our uncharted journey.
The morning started with Brian getting in a solid run while the desert air was still cool. It’s been essential for us to keep up our routine on the trail, and the quiet scenery here makes those miles fly by.
Downtown Slow-Down
After Brian cooled off, we headed downtown to the Plaza. We spent about 30 minutes just wandering under the beautiful white arches and soaking in the historic architecture. Of course, a plaza walk isn’t complete without a treat, so I grabbed an iced coffee to keep things chilled.
Spa Day for Ruby
We’ve been trying to find a good groomer on the road, and we finally made arrangements to get Ruby in for a trim. While she was getting pampered, we realized we had a rare opportunity for a quiet lunch without our four-legged shadow.
We headed over to Agave Grill and had a wonderful meal. It’s nice to take a break from the RV kitchen every once in a while, especially when the atmosphere is this relaxed.

When we picked Ruby up, she looked (and smelled!) fantastic. However, the groomer noticed her teeth could use some professional attention. Since we prioritize health for the whole family, we’ve already lined up a vet appointment in Phoenix for tomorrow to get her a proper cleaning.
Afternoon R&R
The rest of the day stayed intentionally slow. Brian spent some time washing the truck (it’s amazing how much desert dust the Ram can collect!) and Lori finished a couple of books she had been working through.
We eventually drifted back to the Plaza for a second round of coffee and a stop at the Library to restock our reading material. Ruby, exhausted from her big spa day, found the perfect spot to recharge her batteries once we got back to the rig.
It’s days like these—the ones that don’t make it into the “adventure” brochures—that actually make this lifestyle sustainable. Tomorrow we head to the city, but today was exactly what we needed.
Till next time,
Brian, Lori and Miss Ruby
