Conquering the Switchbacks: Chimney Rock Loop at Capitol Reef
We tackled the Chimney Rock Loop Trail in Capitol Reef National Park this morning—a fantastic 3.5 to 4-mile trek that gets the heart pumping right out of the gate.
The weather couldn’t have been more cooperative: comfortable temperatures in the upper 60s paired with light cloud cover that kept the desert sun from beating down on exposed red rock.
Trail Highlights
- The Climb: The trail wastes zero time. The first half-mile hits you with a steep series of switchbacks, gaining roughly 500 feet right up the mesa side. It is definitely a leg-burner to start.
- The Payoff: Once you top out and join the loop, the grade levels out considerably. From the rim, the panoramic views looking down across Highway 24, the Fruita valley, and the dramatic fold of the Waterpocket formations make every ounce of that opening effort worthwhile.
- The Loop: After that initial grunt, the loop itself is smooth sailing, rolling across the upper bench before descending back down to the trailhead.
A great morning trail if you want sweeping views and a solid workout before the afternoon heat rolls in.
