Soulmates Uncharted Journey: Desert Drives & Desert Dwellers
March 28, 2026
Yestwrday was one of those days where the truck’s air conditioning felt less like a luxury and more like a lifeline! We decided to head out to Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, and it did not disappoint, though the thermometer gave us a bit of a shock.
Exploring the Ajo Mountain Drive
We opted for the 24-mile loop drive, which was the perfect way to see the scenery without melting. At one point, the truck’s thermometer spiked to 110°F, but we think the “real” temperature was hovering between 99°and 100°.
The drive took us about two hours because we couldn’t help but stop and get out to admire the mountains and the endless sea of cacti. The road, however, was a different story—the washboard was incredibly rough, almost giving that bumpy road at Fort Craig a run for its money!
Wildlife & Nature
The desert was alive today! During our stops, I (Lori) managed to run into:
Two lizards
One tiny little snake
Countless towering organ pipe and saguaro cacti
Staying on diet
After shaking our bones loose on that rough road, we made a quick trip to the grocery store to stock up. We are staying disciplined with our diet, even on travel days. Tonight’s dinner was:
Wild-caught Salmon
Fresh Asparagus
Avocado
It’s the perfect light, keto-friendly fuel to keep us feeling good as we navigate this heat.
Lori’s Corner & Ruby’s View
Lori: It’s still nearly 100°F outside right now, but we are tucked away and nice and cool in the RV. We’re looking forward to that temperature drop tonight; it’s supposed to get down to a beautiful 59°F or 60°F, which makes for the best sleeping weather.
Ruby: She’s already settled in for the night. She’s had her dinner and is currently perched on her pillow in her favorite spot—right by the window. She’s got a perfect 360-view: one eye on us and one eye on the desert sunset outside.
Evening Plans
We’re settling in to relax. I’ve been on a bit of a James Bond movie kick lately, so we might see which 007 adventure is next on the list.
That’s it for us today. Goodnight from Brian, Lori, and Ruby!
