Desert Solitude: Finding Our Way to Gunsight Wash

April 7, 2026

Location: Gunsight Wash, Why, Arizona

Today was one of those quintessential “West” days. Lori, Ruby, and I unhitched the Ram 3500 and took a drive just south of the little town of Why, Arizona. We ended up at Gunsight Wash, a stunning expanse of the Sonoran Desert that feels like the middle of nowhere, yet is filled with a unique kind of life.

Between the towering Saguaro cacti and the rugged horizon, it’s easy to see why this area is a favorite for folks like us who crave quiet and wide-open spaces.

So, What exactly is “BLM Land”?

Back in Indiana, we didn’t really have a concept of this, so for our friends and family following along: BLM stands for the Bureau of Land Management. Think of it as the “People’s Land.” While National Parks are like protected museums where you have to follow strict rules and stay in designated spots, BLM land is multi-use public land managed by the government. Out here in the West, it’s the holy grail for RVers.

Boondocking: This is “dispersed camping.” There are no water hookups, no electricity, and no neighbors for miles. It’s just us, the Outdoors RV, and the desert.

The 14-Day Rule: Most BLM spots allow you to stay for free for up to 14 days. After that, you pack up and find a new piece of paradise.

Leave No Trace: There are no trash cans or services. We “pack it in and pack it out” to keep the desert as pristine as we found it.

Exploring Gunsight Wash

Gunsight Wash is technically a massive “wash” (a dry creek bed) that provides a natural gateway into the desert. We spent the afternoon scouting the area, watching Ruby explore the (mostly) sand and gravel trails, and just taking in the silence. It’s located just a few miles from the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, so the views are world-class.

Next Stop: We’re keeping an eye out for some live music in Ajo this weekend before we move on!
